ep 4: 'where are you 'really' from?' and other questions we struggle to answer ft. Daisy Narayan
how we have learnt to embrace our answers to these dreaded questions

Navigating the intricate paths of cultural identity can be both a complex and fascinating journey. I had an enlightening conversation with my dear friend Daisy Narayan in a recent podcast episode. As immigrants, we shared our experiences and explored the myriad ways our backgrounds shape our interactions. Our discussion was filled with humour, raw emotions, and heartwarming perspectives on identity. We delved into everything from puns and dad jokes to the tricky question of where we're "really from."
Daisy's unique insights were eye-opening, offering a fresh perspective on cultural identity and the concept of belonging. We further delved into how our cultural backgrounds have moulded our outlooks and expressions of identity. We reminisced about cherished memories of visiting our extended families and the profound connection to our roots that these experiences have fostered. The dynamics of colonialism, the diverse experiences of migrants, and the impact of living abroad on our relationship with our culture were also part of our in-depth discussion.
Discussing the evolution of our cultural identities, we touched on the importance of staying connected to our roots and the challenges faced by younger generations in solidifying their identities. The conversation rounded off with a reflection on the impact of colonization and assimilation, the value of celebrating our cultures while learning about others, and the power of conversations in strengthening cultural ties.
An excerpt from the episode:
RESHINTHINE: What's one thing you wish other people understood?
DAISY: “I wish people understood that just because people look a certain way and like I look stereotypically Indian, right, I wish people would not assume that just because I look Indian, my story, my culture identity is the same as an Indian from the mainland or like any other Indian.
I wish people understood more about the diaspora... I just wish people understood that not all people share the same reality, not all people share the same cultural identity….Even in India in itself like there are so many different cultures within the country. Tt's the same for people outside of India. They're still Indian, but like they just have….experienced a culture shift in a different way. Those are big differences.”
Listening to Daisy's experiences and insights was a wonderful reminder of the diversity and richness of our cultural identities. It reminded me that while we may have left our homelands, we carry our roots with us wherever we go. Our identities are not defined by geographical boundaries but by our experiences, memories, and connections. In a world where the question of cultural identity often brings confusion and debate, conversations like these are essential. They foster understanding, build bridges, and most importantly, remind us that our cultural identity is a vital part of who we are.
As we navigate the complexities of cultural identity in the modern world, it is crucial to celebrate our unique backgrounds and share our stories, just as Daisy did. No matter where we are from or where we now call home, our cultural identity is a beautiful tapestry woven from the threads of our experiences, memories, and connections. I am incredibly grateful to Daisy Narayan for sharing her unique experience and insights into cultural identity. I hope our conversation resonates with you, encourages you to explore your own cultural identity, and fosters a sense of belonging wherever you are.
